Government of Pakistan bans the sale of loose cigarettes

20 June 2018 – In a historical move, the Government of Pakistan has banned the sale of loose cigarette sticks with immediate effect. This landmark decision came through a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) Notification No SRO 415 (1)/2018, published on 3 April this year.  The Notification says that “No retail seller or any person shall sell, offer for sale or distribute any cigarettes unless they are in a packet of at least twenty cigarette sticks”. The Government has already banned the sale of cigarettes to minors.

Established in 2000 by CDC and other partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the Bob Keegan Polio Eradication Heroes Fund recognizes polio workers who have suffered from serious injuries or death as a direct consequence of their participation in polio eradication activities.

26 October 2017 – More than 95 000 cases of suspected dengue fever have been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan since the start of the outbreak On 19 July 2017, including more than 20 000 laboratory-confirmed cases and 61 deaths. The district of Peshawar has reported the highest number of cases, with a total of 88 000 suspected cases, including 19 000 confirmed cases and 56 deaths as of 24 October 2017.

31 July 2017 – With 5 national campaigns since October 2016, Pakistan is well positioned to face the challenges ahead. At the end of May 2017, more than 38 million children under the age of 5 were vaccinated against polio in Pakistan. During the campaign, over 250 000 trained polio workers went from house to house across the length and breadth of the country to vaccinate children against the crippling disease.
