Routine immunization

Routine immunization against polio has been mandatory since 1981.      

National immunization days

National immunization days have been carried out on a regular basis from 1995 to 1999, in coordination with other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. 

Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance

National reporting started in 1998. Virological classification of cases was adopted in 1998. The United Arab Emirates has achieved and maintained the certification standards since 2007.

Laboratory

There is no poliovirus laboratory in the United Arab Emirates; it is served by Oman's national poliovirus laboratory in Muscat. 

Phase 1 of laboratory containment of polioviruses has been completed and a report documenting the quality of containment activities has been submitted to WHO.

Saudi Arabia

Map of Saudi ArabiaThe last virologically-confirmed polio case due to indigenous virus was reported in Saudi Arabia on 28 October, 1995. A case was reported on 24 January, 1998, and was proved to be due to a virus closely related to the prevailing strains in Afghanistan/Pakistan. Another importation was reported in 2004 in a Sudanese child and genomic sequencing related the isolated virus to Sudan.

Routine immunization

Routine immunization against polio has been mandatory since 1979.  

National immunization days

National immunization days were held regularly from 1995 to 2000, in coordination with other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. supplementary national immunization days have been held since 2001, essentially covering areas visited by pilgrims and umra visitors.

Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance

National reporting started in Saudi Arabia in 1989 and shifted to virological classification in 1996. Saudi Arabia has achieved and maintained certification standard levels since 1994.

The Saudi Arabia National Poliovirus Laboratory is a WHO-accredited laboratory of the Eastern Mediterranean Region poliovirus laboratories network.

Iraq

The last laboratory-confirmed indigenous polio case was reported on 28 January, 2000. In 2014 two wild polio cases were reported from Baghdad – Resafa province. Dates of onset of the cases were February and April 2014. Both cases were linked to Syria outbreak of 2013.

Routine immunization

Routine immunization against polio has been mandatory since 1985. After reaching high levels in 1980s, routine immunization decreased significantly in the 1990s then increased again.  

National immunization days

National immunization days have been held yearly since 1995. Iraq has carried out at least two national immunization days every year since then. 

Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance

National reporting started in Iraq since 1997. Virologic classification was introduced in 2000. Iraq has achieved and maintained certification standards since 1997.

National immunization days

National immunization days were carried out on a yearly basis, in coordination with other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, from 1995–2000. 

Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance

National reporting started in Bahrain in 1990. Virological classification of cases has been adopted in Bahrain since 1994. Since 1994, Bahrain has achieved and maintained certification standards of 1 per 100 000 under 15 years.

There is no poliovirus laboratory in Bahrain; it is served by the national poliovirus laboratory in Muscat, Oman. 

Phase 1 of laboratory containment of polioviruses has been completed and a report documenting the quality of containment activities has been submitted to WHO.
