Kuwait reported the last virologically-confirmed polio case on 16 December 1983, before the eradication target was adopted.
Routine immunization
Routine immunization against polio has been mandatory since 1980.
National immunization days
National immunization days were carried out on a regular basis from 1995–2000, in coordination with other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance
National reporting started in 1994 and in same year Kuwait shifted to to virologic clarification. Kuwait has achieved acute flaccid paralysis surveillance indicators of WHO certification standard.
Laboratory
The Kuwait national poliovirus laboratory in the Viral Division of the Public Health Laboratory is part of the Eastern Mediterranean Region poliovirus laboratories network. At present, it is provisionally accredited by WHO.
Phase 1 of laboratory containment of polioviruses has been completed and a report documenting the quality of containment activities has been submitted to WHO.
