Second round of Leadership for Health programme, 15 November 2015–30 January 2016

Following a successful first round, WHO has launched a second round of the Leadership for Health  programme, which will take place between 15 November 2015 and 30 January 2016.

The second round comprises 2 phases: the first will take place in Oman from 15 to 27 November 2015; and the second in Geneva from 20 to 30 January 2016. Between the 2 phases, participants will write papers about leadership challenges in their respective countries. 

Background

A joint collaboration between the World Health Organization and Harvard School of Public Health, the Leadership for Health (LfH) programme aims to establish a critical mass of public health leaders capable of proactively tackle national, regional, and global health challenges that impact the health and socioeconomic well-being of populations. Launched for the first time in January 2015, in partnership with Harvard School of Public Health, the first round of the LfH programme grouped 25 selected mid- to senior-level health professionals from the Region for 4 weeks to enhance their leadership skills.

Methods and approach

The LfH programme utilizes non-traditional teaching methods and focuses on competencies in leadership and leading change; politics of well-being and political analysis; organizational dynamics and change management; team-building, negotiation and conflict resolution; and system-wide thinking and problem-solving for health system strengthening. 

Harvard faculty, WHO staff and selected international and regional experts will facilitate the programme. Participants will also enjoy the opportunity of meeting participants of the first round to establish a solid regional network of regional public health leaders. 

Participants 

Participants of the programme will be public health professionals who have:

  • prior training and qualification in public health;
  • at least 10 years of experience in responsible management and/or leadership positions in public health or health management;
  • demonstrated capacity for high performance, e.g. in public health practice, training or research programmes
  • good listening, speaking and writing abilities in English.

The LfH Programme strongly encourages the participation of women.
