Port Sudan, 19 August 2023 – A WHO chartered flight arrived in Port Sudan today carrying 27 metric tons of medicines, diagnostic and medical supplies worth US$ 1.3 million to respond to health care needs in Sudan. The cargo contains essential medicines and supplies to treat injuries, burns, severe acute malnutrition, as well as common childhood and adult diseases. The delivered supplies will also help to strengthen public health diagnostic capacity for malaria, measles, rubella, cholera, leishmaniasis and hepatitis cases, among other diseases in laboratories and health facilities.

This is the fourth chartered flight that has brought urgently needed essential medicines and medical supplies to Sudan since the start of the conflict in mid-April 2023.  WHO has to date brought in and distributed more than 200 metric tons of supplies using different means by air, sea and land, in addition to supplies that had been prepositioned prior to the war.

“Health workers are heroically working under extremely challenging conditions to meet the health care needs of the Sudanese people. WHO is using every means possible to ensure that medical supplies are available to enable them to effectively manage patients under their care,” said Dr Nahid Khalid, Officer in Charge of WHO in Sudan.

In addition to the delivery of medical supplies, WHO teams have remained on the ground in the different states of Sudan to provide expert advice, training and hands-on support to the health emergency response.

WHO and health partners will continue to work to improve access to health care and alleviate the suffering of the people of Sudan.
