A photo of participants at the workshop on TB operational research and proposal development26 TB officers attended the workshop on operations research methodology and proposal development  27 May 2012 – A workshop on tuberculosis (TB) operational research methodology and proposal development was held in Khartoum from 20 to 24 May 2012.

The workshop  aimed to develop protocols addressing the challenges facing TB control and strengthen the research capacity of the national TB control programme.

Twenty-six surveillance and research officers from the national TB control programme and TB partners from different regions were trained on research methodology and proposal development.

Participants drafted protocols on the following topics:

validating the diagnosis of smear negative and extra-pulmonary TB cases

innovative interventions to reduce defaulting from treatment for TB patients

a pilot study of the impact of the WHO web-based TB surveillance system tool on TB notification from public and private providers.

The workshop was facilitated by Professor Aime De Muynck, Professor of Epidemiology, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium.
