The health systems and services development unit, working with national counterparts in Federal Ministry of Health, contributes to WHO country office efforts in improving the performance of Sudan's health system. 

Its objectives are to:

strengthen national capacity for the organization and management of health services

strengthen national leadership and capacity to formulate evidence-based health policies and strategies

strengthen information and knowledge for building capacity in developing systems and sustainable policy for the health workforce

improve access to quality and rationally-used medical products and technologies.

The unit is comprised of the following programmes. 

Planning, policy, health economics, information, curative medicine, primary health care programme

The programme seeks to strengthen the national leadership and capacity to formulate evidence-based health policies and strategies that contributes to the improved performance of the national health systems

Management capacity-building programme

The programme seeks to build the organization and management capacity of the decentralized health system, particularly at state and locality levels

Human resources for health programme

The programme seeks to strengthen information and knowledge for building capacity in developing systems and sustainable policy for the health workforce with a focus on a balanced skills mix and the equitable deployment and production of nurses and paramedics

Pharmaceuticals, health laboratories and health technologies programme

The programme seeks to advocate and support the formulation and monitoring of comprehensive national policies on access to, quality, and use of, essential medical products, and to provide appropriate tools and technical support to the laboratory network in Sudan to improve the quality of the laboratory diagnostic service.
