28 January 2018 – World Health Organization (WHO) strongly condemns the car bombings in Al-Salmani district in Benghazi on 23 January 2018 that led to death and injury of many civilians. WHO also extends its condolences to the victims' families and renews its humanitarian commitment and support to Libyans throughout the country. WHO staff/focal points reached the venue within short time and supported the efforts of the health authorities in Benghazi in treating the injured patients.

Less than one month ago in December 2017, with ECHO financial support, WHO has provided 60 Basic Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHK), 6 supplementary IEHKs along with nine (9) Trauma kit Type B to Al-Jalaa Hospital and 4 Trauma kits Type B to Benghazi Medical Center. Each IEHK serves 10 000 population for 3 months and each trauma kit is designed to treat 100 moderate to severe trauma cases.

WHO is closely following up the humanitarian situation with the local health authorities and stands ready to provide more help if required.

WHO Libya welcomes the continuous support of ECHO that makes WHO’s response to the urgent needs of the underserved populations in Libya possible.
