Tripoli, 17 December 2019 – Following the recent escalation of violence in and around Tripoli, the World Health Organization (WHO) has delivered emergency medicines and supplies to support five public hospitals and six public primary health care facilities in the most conflict-affected areas. The shipment contains medicines and medical supplies, well as approximately 230,000 treatment courses and supplies to treat more than 25,000 trauma patients.

WHO and the Health Cluster are monitoring the situation closely. The current wave of violence could result in large-scale population displacements from highly-populated areas such as Mashrou El-Hadba and south of Abusalim. Up to 100,000 people are thought to be at risk of being displaced by the violence.

The WHO Representative in Libya, Ms Elizabeth Hoff, says that WHO remains ready to bolster health care facilities and help them respond to urgent health needs.

“We are monitoring the situation carefully and amending our response plans accordingly. With our health partners, we are on standby to scale up our response and help ensure that ill and wounded patients receive the care they need at this critical time.”
