Libya concludes a month of activities to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2017

students from the faculties of medicine and pharmacy at the University of Tripoli presented the results of research on antibiotics use at the eventStudents from the faculties of medicine and pharmacy at the University of Tripoli presented the results of their research on antibiotics use at the concluding event in a series of activities held to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week 201714 December 2017, Tripoli – The Libyan Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organization (WHO) country office in Libya, celebrated the conclusion of a series of activities held to mark World Antibiotic Awareness Week on 14 December. The final event was held in Tripoli in the presence of H.E. The Minister of Health Dr Omar Bashir, Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control Dr Badereddin Alnajaar and other department directors from the Centre, delegates from the Ministry of Animal Wealth, faculty members from the University of Tripoli and Nasser University, and university students.

The event included presentations of a number of research projects and studies on the use of antibiotics in Libyan hospitals. The main presentation was given by students from the faculties of medicine and pharmacy at the University of Tripoli, reflecting their work carried out under the supervision of the microbiology and immunology departments in both faculties, the National Centre for Disease Control, and WHO.

Guided by academic staff from both faculties, the students worked to help decrease the misuse of antibiotics and raise awareness among the public of the dangers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In addition, they conducted an extensive study targeting high school and university students, doctors, and pharmacists on antibiotics use. Following the presentation, participants discussed the results of the students’ work.

Groups of students from other universities across Libya have been organized carry out the same study in their cities between now and 8 January 2018.

WHO country office in Libya praised the awareness-raising activities and presented the students with certificates of appreciation, and reiterated its commitment to providing them with logistical support.
