Jordan opens advanced regional medical warehouses in Ma’an Governorate

1 July 2025, Ma’an, Jordan Jordan has officially inaugurated 4 modernized regional warehouses for medicines and medical supplies in Ma’an Governorate. The facilities were launched under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Health Professor Feras Hawari, with support from the European Union (EU) and in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Jordan.

The upgraded warehouses are a cornerstone of Jordan’s strategy to modernize medical supply chains and ensure the efficient and equitable delivery of essential medicines and vaccines.

With a total storage capacity of 1800 cubic metres, which can be expanded by 20% during emergencies, the warehouses are equipped with cutting-edge systems including cold storage, renewable energy, advanced ventilation and fire safety infrastructure.

“We are advancing steadily towards sustainable access to essential medicines, enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. These new warehouses mark a major step in ensuring equitable, reliable and modern drug supply systems across Jordan,” said Professor Hawari.

The 660 000 Jordanian dinar initiative, fully funded by the EU, aligns with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision and with WHO standards for resilient supply chains. Resilient supply chains are key to achieving progress towards universal health coverage.

“These warehouses reflect Jordan’s unwavering commitment to equitable access to essential medicines,” said WHO Representative in Jordan Dr Iman Shankiti. “They are a testament to the power of partnership and long-term investment in public health.”

EU Ambassador Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas praised the collaboration: “The warehouses in Ma’an are a tangible result of EU, WHO and Jordan’s partnership to strengthen health care access for both Jordanians and Syrian refugees.”

The inauguration contributes to the broader flagship regional initiative, led by WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr Hanan Balkhy, that aims to strengthen supply chain resilience and promote equitable access to medicines across the Region. The initiative places supply chain transformation at the heart of health system strengthening efforts, enabling countries to better withstand shocks and ensure continuity of care.

By ensuring timely and uninterrupted access to quality medicines across southern Jordan and beyond, the new warehouses mark a significant milestone in building a sustainable, fit-for-future health system.
