Kuwait prize 2025
The State of Kuwait Prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region is one of several foundation awards administered by the World Health Organization. The award acknowledges the work of well-known scientists, researchers or dedicated people who have greatly contributed to the advancement of public health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
Purpose
The purpose of the prize is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the prevention, control or research in cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Eligibility
The Prize will be awarded to one or more individuals for making outstanding contributions to the prevention, control and research in cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Current and former members of the WHO Secretariat shall not be eligible to receive the prize. The candidature of a deceased person should not be submitted to the Foundation Committee, unless death occurs after the nomination has been made. A candidate who has previously been awarded and has been re-nominated after several years will only be eligible if a new contribution has been made. A maximum of three recipients per year, one per disease, can receive the prize, if they:
contribute to the successful formulation and implementation of a national policy and/or strategy for cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
submit documentary evidence that their research and other programmes have been translated into policy and have contributed to improving the prevention and/or control of one or more of the three disease groups.
To facilitate the assessment of their work, candidates will be requested to upload documentation in support of their application, illustrating how they made a substantive contribution to the prevention, control or research in one or more of the three disease groups. The Foundation Committee reserves the right to request further information from applicants to better review their applications.
Nature of the prize and attribution
The prize consists of a bronze medal and a sum of money, which will be presented to the recipient, or their representative, in case of absence, by the Chair of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean during the Committee's annual meeting in October.
Deadline for submission
The deadline for submission for the 2025 State of Kuwait Prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region is 1 July 2025.
Prize timeline
The names of shortlisted candidates will be sent to national health administrations for endorsement in August 2025. The Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean will then decide which candidates will receive the prize in October 2025, and the recipients will receive their awards in October 2026 during the 73rd Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean.
