Egypt has a strong system for birth and death registrations. It is estimated that more than 95% of all births and deaths in the country are registered as per national and WHO estimations, there is a general consensus on the need to improve cause of death reporting through improving capacity for proper death certificate recording and International Classification of Diseases (ICD10) coding of cause of death, as well as validation and enhancing supervision and monitoring of the whole system.
On Monday 9 May 2016, the Health Information Centre at the Ministry of Health and Population, in collaboration with the WHO Egypt country office, conducted a workshop on improving civil registration and vital statistics through addressing specific recommendations developed following a comprehensive assessment conducted in 2012.
Participants of the workshop included all stakeholders concerned with civil registration and vital statistics from the Ministry of Health and Population and other offices. Ministry participants included those from the Health Information Centre, curative and preventive sectors, as well as staff from maternal and child health directorates and concerned registration officers from the provincial level. Key civil registration and vital statistics staff participated from the national statistical agency the Central Agency for Mass Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the Ministry of the Interior Civil Registration Department, the Forensic Department of the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Planning and Administrative Development. WHO Regional Office and country staff from relevant WHO technical programmes supported the workshop.
