On 17 February 2014 the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt launched their national acceleration plan for child and maternal health. Egypt was identified as one of the 10 priority countries at a high-level meeting in Dubai in January 2013 needing to develop and implement plans to improve maternal and child health. This acceleration plan targets a population of about 22 million people.

WHO Representative Dr Henk Bekedam congratulated the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt for progress made over the past 20 year in reducing child and maternal mortality and thanked partners UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund. The ceremony was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Health Dr Ghada Nasr.

The target set for achievement of the Millennium Development Goals is 2015. Egypt has achieved the target of MDG 4 to reduce child mortality and is on track to achieve the target of MDG 5 to reduce maternal mortality.
