An intercountry laboratory training workshop on measles and rubella virus detection, sequence and sequence analysis took place in Tunis, Tunisia, from 2 to 7 April 2012. The objectives of the meeting were to: review the measles/rubella laboratory surveillance network; support and strengthen measles and rubella laboratory network capacity on molecular epidemiology of characterization of measles and rubella viruses; and provide a valuable tool for documentation of measles and rubella viruses (indigenous versus importation) to achieve measles elimination in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
