Road traffic crashes stand among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality across the world. Besides the devastating and human toll caused by resultant injuries, disabilities and deaths, they have enormous economic and social consequences for the injured person, the family, the community and the country. To this major public health and development issue, the World Health Organization dedicated World Health Day 2004 to road safety with the slogan “Road safety is no accident”.

The Day also witnessed the launch of the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention, a joint WHO and World Bank activity, which presents a comprehensive assessment of the magnitude and impact of the problem and the intervention strategies available with actionable recommendations for future joint action to reduce the heavy toll.

In this context, World Health Day is not merely seen as a celebration event but a commitment towards a cause, dedication to an objective and a promise for a better future
