Outbreak update – dengue in Pakistan

26 October 2017 – The provincial health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan has reported an additional 12 430 suspected cases of dengue fever and 4 deaths since last week. So far, a cumulative total of 87 250 cases have been reported since 19 July 2017, including 18 892 laboratory-confirmed cases and 58 deaths.

26 October 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has reported a cumulative total of 862858 suspected cases of cholera including 2177 associated deaths as of 26 July for the outbreak which started in October 2016.

26 October 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 54 suspected cases of cholera and 0 deaths for week 41 (9 – 15 October 2017). The cumulative number of cases stands at 77 783, including 1159 associated deaths across the country. 

Dengue in Pakistan: outbreak update

19 October 2017 – The provincial health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan has reported a cumulative total of 74 820 cases of suspected dengue fever since the outbreak was first reported on 19 July 2017, including 15 828 laboratory-confirmed cases and 54 deaths.

27 July 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has reported a cumulative total of 408 583 suspected cases of cholera including 1885 associated deaths as of 26 July for the outbreak which started in October 2016.

27 July 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 1068 AWD/cholera cases and 3 deaths for week 28 (10 – 16 July 2017) with a case-fatality rate of 0.3%. Of these, the highest number of cases (286/27%) was reported in Middle Shebelle region, followed by Mudug, Sool and Banadir.

18 July 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 35 052 suspected cholera cases and 53 associated deaths for week 28 (9 to 15 July 2017). A cumulative total of 351 045 suspected cases of cholera and 1790 associated deaths have been recorded as of 04 July for the outbreak which started in October 2016.

18 July 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 1121 cholera cases and 3 deaths for week 26 (26 June – 2 July 2017). Of these, 272 cases (24% of the total cases) were reported in Banadir region. The number of new cases has declined by 18% from the past week, and the number of deaths dropped to 14% compared to week 24.

MERS situation update, June 2017

At the end of June 2017, a total of 2039 laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), including 730 deaths (case–fatality rate: 35.8%) were reported globally; the majority of these cases were reported from Saudi Arabia (1671 laboratory-confirmed cases, including 656 deaths with a case–fatality rate of 39.3%).

06 July 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 50 998 suspected cholera cases and 218 associated deaths during the period 28 June to 04 July 2017. A cumulative total of 27 5987 suspected cases of cholera and 1634 associated deaths have been recorded as of 04 July during the outbreak which started in October 2016.

29 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 39 688 suspected cholera cases and 183 associated deaths during the period 22 to 27 June 2017. A cumulative total of 224 989 suspected cases of cholera and 1416 associated deaths have been recorded as of 27 June during the outbreak which started in October 2016.

27 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 1979 AWD/ cholera cases and 13 deaths for week 24 (12 - 18 June 2017). Of these, 337 cases (17% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region. This is a 19% decrease in the number of new cases from week 23, and can be attributed to timely and effective intervention efforts over the past months.

22 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 37 079 suspected cholera cases and 196 associated deaths during the period 13 June to 19 June 2017.

15 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 29 562 suspected cholera cases and 172 associated deaths during the period from 5 to 12 June 2017. Since the outbreak started in October 2016, a cumulative total of 140 116 suspected cases of cholera and 989 associated deaths have been reported across the country.

15 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 2429 acute watery diarrhoea/cholera cases and 19 deaths for week 23 (5–11 June 2017). Of these, 460 cases (19% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region. The cholera outbreak which started in January 2017 has seen a cumulative total of 51 036 cases including 782 deaths.

MERS situation update, May 2017

At the end of May 2017, a total of 1980 laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), including 720 deaths (case–fatality rate: 36.4%) were reported globally; the majority of these cases were reported from Saudi Arabia (1613 laboratory-confirmed cases, including 646 deaths with a case–fatality rate of 40.1%).

10 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded an additional 13 912 cholera cases in the country between 3 and 6 June 2017. A cumulative total of 96 219 suspected cases of cholera and 746 associated deaths have been reported across the country since the outbreak started in October 2016.

10 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 2679 AWD/ cholera cases and 23 deaths for week 21 (22 - 29 May 2017). The cumulative figures for the cholera outbreak since the beginning of the year stands at 45400 cases and 738 deaths. The case-fatality rate of 1.6% remains above the emergency threshold of 1%.

20 May 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has released updated numbers of cholera cases in the country. Since the last update on 27 April, 23 425 new suspected cases of cholera and 242 related deaths (case-fatality rate 1.1%) have been reported, mainly from Amran, Hajjah and Sana’a governorates and Sana’a city.

23 April 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 2745 cases of cholera and 28 deaths which were reported from 50 districts in 12 regions during week 15 (10–16 April). Out of 20 stool samples collected last week from suspected AWD/cholera cases in Dolow and Abudwak in Bay region, 12 tested positive for vibrio cholerae 01, ogawa serotype.

Update: chikungunya cases in Pakistan

13 April 2017 – Between 19 December 2016 and 30 March 2017, a total of 1018 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported in various districts in Karachi. No deaths have been reported so far.

26 March 2017 - The number of cholera cases reported by the Ministry of Health in Somalia has reached a cumulative 17 211 cases and 388 deaths with a case fatality rate of 2.25%, which is nearly 4 times as many as were recorded for the same period in 2016, and surpasses the total number of cases recorded in 2016.

21 March 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has released updated figures for the ongoing outbreak of cholera. During the week of 6–12 March 2017, 88 new suspected cases of cholera and 2 deaths have been reported, mainly from Hajjah, Al Bayda and Sana’a governorates.

Cholera in Somalia, monthly situation update

8 March 2017 – During the month of February 2017, the rise in the number of cases of acute watery diarrhoea/cholera was significant – from 3113 cases and 47 deaths in January to 4621 cases and 138 deaths in February.

7 March 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen released additional figures for the ongoing outbreak of cholera. Since the last update on 26 February 2017, 1598 new suspected cases of cholera and zero deaths have been reported.

27 February 2017 – Pakistan's Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has reported cases of Chikungunya in the country for the first time.

Update on cholera in Yemen

26 February 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen released additional figures for the ongoing outbreak of cholera. Since the last update on 31 January 2017, 1610 new suspected cases of cholera, including 4 deaths have been reported.

22 February 2017  - A total of 3130 new suspected cholera cases and 0 deaths were reported in Yemen for January 2017.

13 February 2017 – A total of 913 new suspected cases of cholera, including 10 deaths and a case–fatality rate of 1.1% have been reported in Somalia by the federal Ministry of Health.

25 January 2017 – The Ministry of Health in Somalia provided WHO with an update on the ongoing outbreak of cholera. Since the last update on 18 January 2017, a total of 930 additional suspected cases of cholera, including 6 deaths have been reported.
