Blood_transfusion_centres29 April 2018, Libya – With the financial support of the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), the World Health Organization (WHO) provided 42 000 blood bags to blood transfusion centres in east Libya. These much needed lifesaving supplies will be used for patients in need of blood transfusion in the hospitals of the eastern region of the country.

Blood transfusion centres throughout the country are challenged with shortage of blood bags and other systematic problems such as lack of fluidity. WHO is committed to providing immediate and long-term support to these centres. The Organization is also working with the local health authorities on advanced planning to meet the needs in 2018.

“WHO with our partners have made tremendous efforts to prevent the collapse of the Libyan health system, but thousands of people remain in dire need of critical health services,” said Dr Jaffar Hussain, WHO Representative to Libya.
