19 November 2018 – WHO, in collaboration with the Libyan Ministry of Health, organized cascade training in Tunis, Tunisia, on 7–10 November, to disseminate knowledge for the introduction and implementation of the family practice approach in the country. The course was attended by 40 course participants, including managers and health workers from the Ministry of Health and from the regional level, and from 6 selected primary health care facilities in the West, South and East regions of Libya.

The training course was facilitated by Libyan trainers, who were selected during a training of trainers workshop held in July 2018 and given a comprehensive briefing by a WHO family practice expert. The training course was supervised and evaluated by an external expert who provided feedback on how to improve the quality of the various sessions. The enhanced leadership and communication skills will facilitate the expansion of the family practice approach to other health facilities in subsequent phases of implementation.

The training will be followed by further courses on the different technical areas covered by the UK Department for International Development (DFID)-funded primary health care project in Libya. This will enable knowledge and skills to be cascaded to all levels of the health care system involved in the management and delivery of primary health care services. WHO extends its gratitude to DFID for financially supporting this essential project, which will lay the foundation for a more robust and resilient health system in Libya.
