IMCI coverage data and information on implementation updated for the year 2005 for most countries in the Region

Information on IMCI coverage up to the end of 2005 has been updated for most countries implementing IMCI in the Region, namely: Afghanistan, Egypt, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia and Yemen. Implementation of IMCI continued at a fast rate in Afghanistan, reaching a third of health facilities in two thirds of districts in the country. Egypt was on track with its ambitious target to cover the whole under-five population in the country by the end of 2007: two thirds of health facilities were reached, covering an estimated three quarters of the under-five population. The Islamic Republic of Iran also reported a high IMCI coverage of 95% of health facilities providing primary health care services to two thirds of under-five children. IMCI training activities in Morocco increased substantially in 2005, with a fourth of health facilities reached, covering an estimated one third of the under-five population. More than two thirds of health facilities were covered in Oman by the locally adapted IMCI strategy. In Sudan, about half of all targeted health facilities were reported to have staff trained in IMCI by the end of 2005. IMCI implementation in Tunisia continued steadily at the same rate as the previous years, reaching 8% of primary health care facilities in the country. Finally, IMCI training activities were reported to have reached a quarter of health facilities in Yemen. IMCI capacity building activities continued in Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, to prepare for district implementation. To view information on IMCI coverage by country in the Region, click here.
