The regional HIV/AIDS/STI
programme aims to develop national capacity in the
health sector to strengthen and scale up all aspects
of prevention, treatment and care. It works closely
with national governments, academic institutions,
civil society and international partner
organizations to:

increase national
political commitment and leadership in HIV/AIDS
programmes within the health sector,
-
link these
programmes to the main health and development
plans of the countries,
-
strengthen
programme planning, management, monitoring and
evaluation, and
-
strengthen national
capacity in the delivery of interventions and
services.

World AIDS Day is being
celebrated this year under the theme of “Universal Access and
Human Rights,” with affirmative slogans based on the theme, “I
am”:

am accepted
I am getting treatment
I am safe
This year’s theme and slogans promote HIV and AIDS awareness
through translating human rights ideals into understandable,
practical and proactive terms.

The eleventh Lebanese congress
on clinical microbiology and infectious disease will be held in
Bristol Hotel – Beirut, Lebanon whereupon our AIDS and Sexually
Transmitted Diseases unit will be presenting the Eastern

The Moroccan Association Against
AIDS (ALCS) welcomes the
repeal of the ban on entry and residence in the U.S. for people
with HIV and calls upon Arab countries who practice such a
discriminatory measure to end the prohibition of entry and
residence of people with HIV in their territory.

Support to harm reduction projects

The Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction
Association (MENAHRA)
aims to increase harm reduction capacity in the Middle East and
North Africa Region (MENA). Within the framework of their
support to MENAHRA, the World Health Organization Regional Office
for the Eastern Mediterranean, in collaboration with the
International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA), and with the
support of the Drosos Foundation – Switzerland announce a
call for proposals to support harm reduction projects in the
Region.

WHO ART and mother-to-child transmission guidelines revision
In view of programmatic experience and new scientific evidence,
WHO headquarters is in the process of revising the guidelines
for antiretroviral treatment of adults and adolescents and the
guidelines for antiretroviral treatment of pregnant women and
prevention of HIV infection in infants. Updated guidelines will
be available in November 2009.

Regional strategy for the prevention and control of sexually
transmitted infections: 2009–2015
The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office has developed a regional
strategy for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted
infections: 2009–2015. It aims to generate an accelerated regional
response for the prevention and control of STIs in order to achieve
international health goals. The STI regional strategy technical
paper was presented to and endorsed by the Ministers of Health of
the Eastern Mediterranean Region at their 55th Regional Committee
meeting in 2008.
