National level

WHO introduced the concept of patient safety in Afghanistan in 2009. In 2012, WHO signed a pledge with the Ministry of Public Health on "Patient Safety/Clean Care is Safer Care". 

Hospital level

To date, around 338 professional staff from central and provincial hospitals have been trained, including hospital directors, chief of obstetrics/gynaecology, chief of surgery, head of nursing, technical directors and trainers. The focus has been on introduction to patient safety, hand washing, preparation of hand rub solution and the safe surgery checklist. 

Community level

To date, 752 community health supervisors, religious leaders and school teachers (544 male and 192 female) from various provinces have been trained on steps of hand washing as recommended by the WHO patient safety programme. 

Information, Education and Communication materials

20 000 plastic banners were donated to the Ministry of Education based on their request to distribute to all schools across the country; 6000 have been given to the Ministry of Public Health based on their request to distribute to all health facilities, including hospitals across the country. Finally, a 1000 banners were distributed during training sessions at hospitals, nongovernmental organizations and field offices.
