In October 2007, the Regional Committee of the Eastern Mediterranean expressed concern at the burden imposed by neglected tropical diseases. The Regional Committee issued resolution EM/RC54/R.3 to give priority to the control of neglected tropical diseases, to scale up prevention and control and to strengthen partnerships at global, regional and national level.

WHO was requested to provide technical support to Member States in developing targeted programmes, producing necessary guidelines and conducting operational research.
