Yemen poised to eliminate two debilitating neglected tropical diseases in 2015

Two Yemeni boysSchistosomiasis affects almost 240 million people worldwide, and more than 700 million people live in endemic areas.6 February 2015, Geneva – Campaigns aimed at tackling neglected tropical diseases in Yemen have accelerated with the country on the brink of eliminating schistosomiasis (bilharzia) as a public health problem soon. Latest data from the Ministry of Public Health and Population show that the proportion of heavy schistosomiasis infections has dropped to below 1% in two-thirds of 36 sentinel sites across the country.
