Participants from 13 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region submitted art works on high blood pressure, the theme of this year’s World Health Day. The work revealed a high level of awareness of this health issue, illustrating the causes of high blood pressure such as physical inactivity, smoking, unhealthy diet and excessive use of salt and alcohol.

Once the deadline was over, the process began of classifying the entries into five age groups from 8 to 18. Three young people from the AFS Egypt intercultural programme, namely Anita from Germany, Carson from USA and Jihad from Egypt, handled the classification process after being briefed on the theme and context.

With plenty of great ideas, colours and designs, the final selection was not an easy job. Two professional artists, Dr Magdy Habashy and Mr Magdy Kafrawy, were on board to judge and select the winners with the help of the young people. Five winners (ranked from 1 to 5) were selected in each age group.

Participants from Bahrain, Egypt, Islamic Republic of Iran, Morocco, Oman and United Arab Emirates won. Detailed results will be announced on 7 April 2013 and the winners will receive their prizes and certificates during national World Health Day activities.

The winners’ paintings will be posted in a web gallery on the WHO web site and displayed in the entrance of the Regional Office.
