The global target is to achieve at least 90% coverage of diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus (DPT3)-containing vaccine at national level and at least 80% in every district. From 2000 to 2010, the regional average of DPT3 coverage increased from 79% to 88%.

The goal of the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy, adopted by countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, is to achieve by 2015 a two thirds' reduction in morbidity and mortality of vaccine-preventable diseases, as compared to the level of 2000. Strengthening surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases is fundamental for monitoring progress towards achieving this target.
