The remarkable interest in introducing the IMCI approach (Integrated Management of Child Health) into teaching programmes of medical and allied health professional schools in the Region is shown by the rapidly increasing number of teaching institutions which have already incorporated it into their teaching. A total of 66 participants attended this second Consultation on IMCI Pre-service Training, representing 29 teaching institutions and ministries of health of 10 countries in the Region, one UNICEF country office and WHO at all levels, including also a team from the WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO), to review progress in this area. Dr H.A. Gezairy, Regional Director of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean, Dr M.H. Khayat, his senior policy adviser, and Dr Elizabeth Mason, director of the WHO Child and Adolescent Health and Development (CAH) Department opened the Consultation. The first 3 days focused on three themes, namely the Regional strategy on IMCI pre-service training, sustainability issues and results from the field-tests of the IMCI pre-service training evaluation tool developed by the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO). A smaller group of 24 people, including members of the EMRO Technical Committee on IMCI Pre-service Training Evaluation—involved in the development and testing of the tool—and senior staff representing 7 medical schools and ministries of health from 5 countries, attended the last 2 days of the Consultation to review the evaluation tool. Preliminary information on the Consultation is available here. The first Consultation was held in Cairo in September 2002.
