Secondary Health Care Facilities in Emergencies | The Darfur Experience
World Health Organization - Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean
Background
The Darfur Crisis has been described as one of the worst
humanitarian crises in the world today. By the end of
2004, there were an estimated two million people
affected by continued armed conflict and violence
against civilians.
Sudan’s Greater Darfur Region (comprising of three
states: North, West and South Darfur) covers about
510,888 sq km, an area the size of France, representing
one fifth of Sudan’s surface area.
The region hosts
approximately 6.77 million people of different ethnic
groups (20% of the country population). Darfur is a poor
and underdeveloped region, with the highest maternal and
infant mortality rates of Sudan.
The World Health
Organization (WHO) in Sudan took it as one of its main
areas of work to rehabilitate secondary health care
facilities in Darfur.
On this website you will find a recompilation of all relevant
material on the rehabilitation of secondary health care facilities
in Darfur, during and after the emerging crisis that started at the
end of 2003. Besides a narrative description of the situation and
the activities implemented by the World Health Organization in Sudan
and partners, you will find photos, maps and reference documents
that give an in-depth view of the experience in Darfur.
