World Blood Donor Day: Celebrating the gift of
blood

The Federal
Ministry of Health of the Republic of Sudan and Ministry of Health of
Gedarif State in collaboration with World Health Organization celebrated
World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2009 to pay tribute to voluntary blood
donors who give a precious gift freely and without any reward to people they
will never meet. The day is dedicated to salute these everyday unsung
heroes, who want to help their fellow citizens. The celebration took place
in Gedarif State in the presence of Her Excellency the Federal Minister of
Health, Dr Shokai Tabita; Dr Mohamed Abdur Rab, WHO Representative in Sudan
and other federal and state officials.

WHO and Partners Evaluate the Medical
Entomology and Vector Control Regional Master Degree in Sudan

The meeting of the Steering Committee for
the Regional Master of science degree course in medical entomology and
vector control was held in Khartoum, Sudan from 8-10 June 2009. The course
was launched in August 2008 through a Regional Committee Resolution where
Member States endorsed integrated vector management as the regional
strategic approach for vector control and prevention of vector-borne
diseases. The first batch, included students 21 students coming from: Yemen,
Somalia, Palestine, Tanzania and Sudan.

Sudan strengthen its influenza H1N1
surveillance measures

Sudan Federal
Ministry of Health (FMOH) installed a thermal scanner in the Arrival Hall of
Khartoum International Airport to monitor each passenger’s body temperature
as a preventive measure to detect possible H1N1 Influenza cases.
Once the
scanner identifies passenger with fever, a medical team makes a quick check
up and takes the necessary measures to follow up on the case for 10
consecutive days. A medical team with an ambulance is on standby at the
airport 24 hours a day.

WHO in Sudan
celebrated World Health Day 2009

WHO country office in Sudan celebrated the World Health
Day 2009 under the global theme “Save lives. Make hospitals safe in
emergencies”. On April 6, one day prior to the celebration, a press
conference was held in Sudan News Agency where WHO Representative Dr.
Mohamad Abdur Rab and Sudan Federal Minister of Health Dr. Tabitta Boutrous
Shokay explained this year’s theme and stressed on the need to make
hospitals safe in Sudan.

National Stop TB Partnership in
Sudan

Sudan shoulders 15%
of tuberculosis burden in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The estimated TB
incidence in 2006 was 242/100,000 population for all TB forms and
108/100,000 for sputum smear positive tuberculosis (Ref: Global TB report
2008). The prevalence and mortality of all TB forms were estimated at 419
and 68/100,000 population, respectively.

Partnership.

9 million Sudanese children will be vaccinated
against polio
A mass polio immunization campaign started in Sudan on Monday 16 February
2009 targeting 9 million children all over the country. The Government of
National Unity, Government of Southern Sudan, World Health Organization and
UNICEF will jointly vaccinate 6 million children in the north and some 3
million in Southern Sudan. During 2008, 26 cases of polio were reported
compared to none in 2006.

WHO and Health Insurance Corporation, Khartoum
State sign an agreement to jointly conduct actuarial study

Khartoum, January
18, 2009
The Health Insurance Corporation, Khartoum State (HICKS) and the World
Health Organization (WHO) in Sudan, signed today a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) to conduct actuarial study to analyse
the current situation of Social Health Insurance with the current number of
subscribers and the levels of services, This study, first of its kind in
Sudan, will reflect on the future of health insurance situation when total
coverage of the population of Khartoum state is achieved.

WHO and its partners sign an agreement to produce a
National Health Account to improve the health of women and children in Sudan

Khartoum, January 5, 2009
The Center Bureau of Statistics, Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and the
World Health Organization (WHO) in Sudan, signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) to conduct a Household Survey in order to produce
National Health Account (NHA) in 15 Northern States. The NHA will provide
policy-makers with the evidence to make better and informed decisions on
allocation of resources and make sure that
spending on health is equitable between all regions and different types of
services.
