WHO and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan sign Basic Host-Country Agreement

Juba, 25 October 2013 - The Basic Host-Country Agreement between the World Health Organization and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan for the establishment of cooperation and was signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. “The agreement is a commitment from the World Health organization and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to work together in order to the improve health indicators like Maternal Mortality and Child Mortality which are a big problem and among the highest in the world” said Honorable Benjamin.

He also said, “I believe our collaboration with the World Health Organization will go a long way to assist us as a young nation to make mile stones”.

Dr Luis SAMBO, the RD of WHO Africa said, “We believe that this very important step in our cooperation will help to improve the delivery of WHO services and products in South Sudan towards the improvement of people’s health”. “Our mission is to work with governments, with partners, and with communities to improve the health status of people to the highest possible level. We are committed to doing so in South Sudan as we do around the world”, added Dr SAMBO.

With the signing of the agreement, WHO South Sudan now has a full diplomatic representation. The agreement was signed in the presence of the honorable Minister of Health, Dr Riek Gai Kok, the Head of the WHO country office, Dr Abdi Aden Mohamed, the WHO Regional delegation, Senior Government officials and the media.
