A WHO mission to review the specialized nursing curriculum took place from 9 to 13 June 2013. The planned mission reviewed the current specialized nursing curricula in Ministry of Health educational institutes in terms of content, validity, sustainability and adaptability to future developments. Recommendations focused on adapting existing advanced nursing diploma programmes on health care management and infection prevention and control into BSc programme for all health care professionals.

Efforts to build adequate human resources for nursing by establishing educational institutes in Oman began 30 years ago. Since then the number of educational institutes for nursing run by the Ministry of Health have expanded and now include both basic and advanced nursing training in critical areas like midwifery, nephrology, and critical care.
