A three-member WHO mission visited Oman from 2 to 6 November 2014 to assist the national team in developing a national plan of action in line with the WHO global action plan 2014–2019. The team facilitated a 3-day strategic planning workshop during which 50 participants including ophthalmologists, optometrists, health educators, researchers, health administrators and experts from the private sector reviewed the status of eye health in Oman. Work groups then deliberated on eye health in the context of the WHO’s health system building blocks (service delivery, medical products and technology, health workforce, health information, health financing and leadership and governance). Strategies were then formulated in line with health system strengthening and the WHO Action Plan. One of the key aims of the plan is to reduce the prevalence of preventable blindness by 25% by 2020.
