Iodine deficiency disorders assessment

A WHO mission to support Oman in developing a protocol for the second national survey on iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Oman took place from 8 to 12 December 2013. Field work for the survey will be in February 2014. It is hoped that the results will give a comprehensive picture of the progress made in Oman towards universal salt iodization and the eradication of IDD.

The first national survey carried out in 1993 set the stage for the establishment of the national salt iodization programme. Despite legislation on the marketing of iodized salt, currently only about two thirds of households consume iodized salt.
