A 3-member WHO in-depth review of the child health programme was conducted in January 2014. The team recognized the remarkable progress Oman has made in reducing mortality and morbidity of children under the age of 5 years and encouraged the Ministry of Health to further reduce child mortality by sustaining achievements for the post-neonatal period, giving more attention to the newborns and healthy growth and development of children. Strengthening the continuum of care of interventions to address hereditary diseases (such as pre-marital counselling, pre-conception care and screening and management of hereditary diseases) was also recommended.
This mission was the first assessment of the comprehensive package of child health services provided in Oman. The team reviewed not only the traditional child health topics like immunization, growth monitoring, nutrition but also more recent concerns such as congenital anomalies and injuries.
