WHO mission reviews status of Oman's organ transplantation programme

acd46985-6d24-44e6-8c23-12be8091083815 December 2021 – As part of WHO's mandate to support national public health programmes, the WHO country office in Oman welcomed organ transplantation experts Dr Stratos, Adviser for the Transplantation Human Organs-Tissues-Cells programme from WHO headquarters, and Dr Yetmgeta, Medical Officer for the Blood and other Products of Human Origin programme from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, for a one-week mission to the country from 21 to 25 November. They were accompanied by Dr Riadh, Professor of Urology and Transplant Surgery.

The team reviewed the current status of Oman's national organ transplantation programme to identify priority areas and gaps that required support and addressed the legal, ethical and clinical perspectives of organ transplantation.

On 22 November, the team met with H.E. the Minister of Health Dr Ahmed bin Mohamed Al-Saidi and other Ministry officials to brief them on the objectives of the mission.

The team visited tertiary hospitals and conducted a workshop on organ transplantation. The mission was guided by the WHO country office in Oman and Dr Ahmed Al-Busaidi, Ministry of Health, and a roadmap will be developed to guide the national organ transplantation programme forward.
