Noncommunicable diseases and mental health

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and mental health conditions are the leading causes of death worldwide. The major risk factors for NCDs are tobacco use, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, and air pollution.

WHO supports national partners to address NCDs and related risk factors, as well as mental health and substance abuse disorders, food system challenges, violence, injuries, and disabilities in Islamic Republic of Iran.

Who we are

The noncommunicable diseases and mental health programme in the WHO country office comprises a multidisciplinary team of public health experts, who together with national and international partners, are committed to reducing the prevalence of NCDs and related risk factors, promoting healthy diets and physical activity, improving mental health, and decreasing injuries and disabilities to improve the health and well-being of the Iranian population.

What we do

WHO provides technical and strategic support to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and other national partners on public policy-making, advocacy, planning, programme evaluation, developing national guidelines, mobilizing resources and building capacity in human resources and enhancing institutional capacity in the area of NCDs.
