What we have achieved

Tricycle extended-spectrum β-lactamase(ESBL)-producing E. Coli surveillance system

A protocol was developed and a surveillance system established following the “One Health” approach. A rapid review of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infection prevention and control (IPC) progress and training was conducted by a team from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. National IPC guidelines were also revised, and capacity-building workshops were held on IPC. National experts participated in training courses on integrated global survey on ESBL-producing E.Coli, establishing a national AMR surveillance system, and laboratory quality management systems.

Training on the rational use of antibiotics and antimicrobial stewardship

Training was delivered to more than 250 focal points of universities of medical sciences.

Raising awareness on antimicrobial resistance

Islamic Republic of Iran marked World Antibiotic Awareness Week campaigns, holding seminars for health care workers and disseminating communication material on mass media and online platforms.

What is next

  • Improvements to ESBL “One Health” surveillance project.
  • Expansion of antimicrobial resistance surveillance sentinel sites.
