WHO estimated that diarrheal diseases were responsible for about 20% of deaths among children aged less than five years in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in 2008.  WHO estimates showed also that rotavirus is responsible for about 90 000 deaths among children aged less than five years in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in 2008, which accounts for around 40% of the diarrheal deaths in this age group. The regional rotavirus gastroenteritis surveillance network showed that rotavirus is the cause of about 40% of the hospitalized diarrheal cases among children aged less than five years.

Rubella has a worldwide distribution the disease incidence is usually highest in spring and winter. Before the introduction of vaccination outbreaks tend to occur every 5 to 6 years.

Large-scale rubella vaccination during the last decade has drastically reduced or practically eliminated rubella and CRS in many developed and in some developing countries.

Rubella has been widely controlled and is close to elimination from countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region that have introduced rubella vaccine with high routine coverage.

The majority of tetanus cases are birth-associated and occur in developing countries among newborn babies or in mothers following unclean deliveries and poor postnatal hygiene. Tetanus in children and adults following injuries may also constitute a considerable public health problem.
