Survey in Egypt
Statement by Dr Keiji Fukuda on behalf of WHO at the Council of Europe hearing on pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Dr Keiji Fukuda, Special Representative for the Director-General on Pandemic Influenza addressed the Council of Europe to soundly refute allegations that WHO created a "fake" pandemic to bring economic benefit to industry. The allegations were put forth in December by an outgoing member of the Council of Europe's health committee. He asked the Council of Europe's health committee to investigate how the public health community, including WHO, handled the pandemic influenza. Press release (Arabic) More (Arabic) WHO welcomes Egyptian organ transplant law 20 January 2010 The World Health Organization welcomed the new Egyptian law that has been initially approved by the Parliament to regulate organ transplant. Dr Hussein A. Gezairy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean said: “The approval of this law is a wonderful step that creates hope for thousands of patients who have been waiting a long time for live-saving transplant operations”. He added, “It is also a significant step towards ending illegal organ trafficking, which usually results in operations conducted under unsafe conditions and harms both donor and patient. A new look for the EMHJ
Since its inception in 1995, EMHJ has grown in reputation and popularity to become a leading biomedical journal of the Region. It has gone from two issues per year to six, and from a handful of submissions per year to over 500. Throughout, quality has been a foremost consideration and EMHJ has striven to maintain high standards through its peer review and editing processes. In its 15 years of publication, EMHJ has remained unchanged in format and periodicity. Therefore, it was agreed by the Editorial Board in September 2009 that EMHJ should be redesigned in a new format and move to monthly publication, starting from January 2010. The aims of EMHJ remain the same: to provide a forum for the publication of a diverse range of biomedical topics pertaining to public health and presentation of new policies and initiatives in health services within the field of work of WHO and with particular reference to the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
