14 November
The campaign slogan for 2009 is "Understand Diabetes and
Take Control".
The World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013 is
“Diabetes Education and Prevention”.
Prevalence of Diabetes in the Eastern
Mediterranean Region
Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent among
both sexes in Member States of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Its
prevalence ranges from between 3.5% and 30.0% and is highest among member
countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at a rate of 11.5% to 30.0%
Many countries in the Region are now reporting
the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus at an increasingly young age. This is
due to increasingly sedentary lifestyles, higher life expectancy and
obesity, High blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases are also on the
rise.

Health requirements and recommendations for entry visas for Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umra, 1430 H (2009)
The
Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia has recently issued a set
of health requirements and recommendations for entry visas
for Saudi Arabia for the Hajj and Umra season, 1430 H
(2009), with special focus on reducing the transmission of
pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza among pilgrims. These health
requirements and recommendations call for those population
groups who are considered to be at high risk for
complications from influenza to refrain voluntarily from
this year’s Hajj. The requirements issued by the Kingdom
also request the health authorities in pilgrims’ countries
of origin to educate and advise pilgrims on basic public
health measures (personal hygiene measures, cough etiquette,
use of antiseptic hand gel, etc.) to be followed during Hajj
and Umra to prevent the spread of pandemic (H1N1) 2009
during the upcoming Hajj season.

self-monitoring tool
100-point checklist
The
100-point checklist is a self-monitoring tool to assess the extent to which
the characteristics of an effective CBI-implementing site are in place.
Members of local and village development committees, cluster representatives
and health volunteers can use the checklist by ticking off items on the list
to give their programme-implementing site a score out of 100 and to identify
gaps or shortcomings. The checklist covers: community organization and
mobilization; intersectoral collaboration, partnership and advocacy; the
community-based information system; levels of water, sanitation, food safety
and air pollution; health development initiatives; emergency preparedness
and response activities; education and literacy; skills development,
vocational training and capacity building; and micro-credit activities.
It is suggested that stakeholders in the programme use this tool
periodically to
monitor and record the status of their programme and use the information in
formulating plans to improve programme deficiencies.
