Weekly update: cholera in Somalia

27 July 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 1068 AWD/cholera cases and 3 deaths for week 28 (10 – 16 July 2017) with a case-fatality rate of 0.3%. Of these, the highest number of cases (286/27%) was reported in Middle Shebelle region, followed by Mudug, Sool and Banadir.

27 July 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has reported a cumulative total of 408 583 suspected cases of cholera including 1885 associated deaths as of 26 July for the outbreak which started in October 2016.

29 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 39 688 suspected cholera cases and 183 associated deaths during the period 22 to 27 June 2017. A cumulative total of 224 989 suspected cases of cholera and 1416 associated deaths have been recorded as of 27 June during the outbreak which started in October 2016.

27 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 1979 AWD/ cholera cases and 13 deaths for week 24 (12 - 18 June 2017). Of these, 337 cases (17% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region. This is a 19% decrease in the number of new cases from week 23, and can be attributed to timely and effective intervention efforts over the past months.

22 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 37 079 suspected cholera cases and 196 associated deaths during the period 13 June to 19 June 2017.

15 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded a total of 29 562 suspected cholera cases and 172 associated deaths during the period from 5 to 12 June 2017. Since the outbreak started in October 2016, a cumulative total of 140 116 suspected cases of cholera and 989 associated deaths have been reported across the country.

15 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 2429 acute watery diarrhoea/cholera cases and 19 deaths for week 23 (5–11 June 2017). Of these, 460 cases (19% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region. The cholera outbreak which started in January 2017 has seen a cumulative total of 51 036 cases including 782 deaths.

10 June 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has recorded an additional 13 912 cholera cases in the country between 3 and 6 June 2017. A cumulative total of 96 219 suspected cases of cholera and 746 associated deaths have been reported across the country since the outbreak started in October 2016.

10 June 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Somalia has reported 2679 AWD/ cholera cases and 23 deaths for week 21 (22 - 29 May 2017). The cumulative figures for the cholera outbreak since the beginning of the year stands at 45400 cases and 738 deaths. The case-fatality rate of 1.6% remains above the emergency threshold of 1%.

20 May 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen has released updated numbers of cholera cases in the country. Since the last update on 27 April, 23 425 new suspected cases of cholera and 242 related deaths (case-fatality rate 1.1%) have been reported, mainly from Amran, Hajjah and Sana’a governorates and Sana’a city.

21 March 2017 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has released updated figures for the ongoing outbreak of cholera. During the week of 6–12 March 2017, 88 new suspected cases of cholera and 2 deaths have been reported, mainly from Hajjah, Al Bayda and Sana’a governorates.

As of 10 January, a total of 15 468 suspected cases of cholera, including 99 associated deaths have been reported, with a case–fatality rate of 0.64%. Of these cases, 180 cases were laboratory-confirmed for Vibrio cholerae 01.

25 January 2017 – The Ministry of Health in Somalia provided WHO with an update on the ongoing outbreak of cholera. Since the last update on 18 January 2017, a total of 930 additional suspected cases of cholera, including 6 deaths have been reported.

The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has released the latest figures on cholera cases in the country. Since the last update, 1089 new suspected cases of cholera and 1 additional death have been reported.

Weekly update: cholera cases in Yemen, 22 December 2016 

The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has released updated figures on cholera cases in the country. Since the last update on 13 December, 1496 new suspected cases of cholera and 4 additional deaths have been reported.  As of 30 November, a total of 14 165 cases and 497 deaths (case–fatality rate 3.51%) have been reported. Of these, 6752 (47.7%) affected females, and 8184 (57.8%) affected children below 5 years of age.

Weekly Update - Cholera cases in Yemen

Since the last update on 6 December, 1173 new suspected cases of acute watery diarrhoea/ cholera and 3 additional deaths have been reported. As of 13 December, a cumulative total of 10 148 suspected cases of cholera, including 92 associated deaths have been reported across all affected governorates, with a case–fatality rate of 1%. The number of laboratory-confirmed cases of Vibrio cholerae 01 has risen to 156.

Update on cholera cases reported in Yemen, 8 December 2016 

To date, 8975 suspected cases of cholera, including 89 associated deaths have been reported, with a case–fatality rate of 1%.  The number of laboratory-confirmed cases of Vibrio cholerae 01 is 138.

Additional cholera cases reported in Yemen

1 December 2016 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has reported additional cases of cholera in Yemen. To date, 7730 suspected cases of cholera, including 82 associated deaths have been reported (case fatality rate of 1.06%). Of these, 122 cases were laboratory-confirmed as Vibrio cholerae 01.

As of 24 November 2016, 6119 suspected cases of cholera, including 68 associated deaths were reported in Sana’a City and Aden, Amran, Al Hudaydah, Al-Bayda‘a, Al-Dhale’a, Ibb, Hajjah, Lahij, Ta’izz and Sana’a governorates.  Of these, 99 cases have been laboratory-confirmed as Vibrio cholerae.

To date, 4825 suspected cases of cholera, including 61 associated deaths were reported in Aden, Amran, Al Hudaydah, Al-Bayda‘a, Al-Dhale’a, Ibb, Hajjah, Lahij, Ta’izz, Sana’a City and Sana’a governorates.

6 November 2016 – A total of 2733 suspected cases and 51 associated deaths have been reported in Ta’iz, Aden, Lahij, Al Hudaydah, Hajjah, Sana'a, Al Bayda, Dhamar and Ibb.

As of 30 October 2016, a total of 1410 suspected cases of cholera, including 45 associated deaths have been reported. Laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera have been reported from Taiz, Aden, Lahj, Al-Hudaydah, Hajjah, Sana'a, Al-Baida and and Ibb governorates.

23 October 2016 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has confirmed additional cases of cholera and cholera-related deaths in the country.

13 October 2016 – The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Yemen has announced the occurrence of additional cases of cholera in Yemen. As of today, a total of 15 cases of cholera have been laboratory-confirmed, of which 11 are from Sana’a, and 4 from Al Bayda.
