1 January 2011 – The 192-member United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a historic resolution in July 2010 to create a new UN agency for women, called the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, or UN Women for short. The decision to create a separate body to deal exclusively with gender-related activities comes years after the UN created specialized agencies to deal with specific issues, including children, population, refugees, food, environment, education, health and tourism, among many others. UN Women became operational on 1 January 2011.
