7 June 2023 – The Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly (WHA) was held from 21 to 30 May 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland under the theme of saving lives, driving health for all. WHO’s 75th anniversary was also marked and the role of the Organization in improving public health since its inception.

Her Excellency the Minister of Health of Bahrain Dr Jaleela bint Alsayed Jawad Hasan chaired WHA76 Committee “A” that discussed key technical areas, including universal health coverage, primary health care and emergency preparedness.

In cooperation with WHO and the SUN movement, H.E. the Minister of Health launched a side event on “The WHO acceleration plan to stop obesity: from endorsement at WHA75 to execution in frontrunner countries”.

In addition, H.E. the Minister of Health and Bahrain’s delegation met with Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, alongside Dr Tasnim Atatrah, WHO Representative in Bahrain, to discuss partnership in the achievement of Health for All by All, namely through policy support. The Bahraini delegation also had an opportunity to engage with WHO senior leadership for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and discuss steps towards preventing and managing NCDs in the country.

The delegation also participated in the Walk the Talk event “The Health for All Challenge”, garnering participation of representatives across Member States, the United Nations, various athletes, international performers, and the community at large in celebrating a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s Director-General and representatives of 5 global foundations, awarded Dr Mariam Athbi Al Jalahama, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain’s National Health Regulatory Authority the 2023 Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion as part of a ceremony celebrating the outstanding contributions of persons and institutions to public health.
