About us

The Malaria and Vector-borne and Tropical Diseases (MVT) unit provides technical support to countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region for the control, elimination and prevention of reintroduction of malaria.

The MVT unit also provides technical support and guidance on implementation of integrated vector surveillance and control of vector-borne diseases and tropical diseases.

The main functions of MVT are to:

  • contribute to guideline development and strategic planning;
  • provide technical support to member states (implementation of interventions, capacity building, resource mobilization, communication and advocacy)​;
  • support surveillance (diseases, vectors, biological threats) and reporting (WHO Integrated data platform; World malaria report, Global report on neglected tropical diseases, WHO Malaria Threats Map, WHO Weekly epidemiological record (WER) updates)​;
  • conduct assessments, programme reviews, risk mapping for subnational tailoring, vector control needs assessment​;
  • support in preparing for disease elimination​;
  • review evidence and information dissemination (translation of guidelines, publication of manuscripts)​; and
  • coordinate delivery of commodities (e.g. Dubai Hub, neglected tropical diseases medicines donation).
