Dr Adham Rashad Ismail Abdel-Moneim assumed his duties as WHO Representative to Saudi Arabia effective 8 January 2023. He was previously WHO Representative in Yemen, a post that he had held from 1 January 2021. Prior to that Dr Abdel-Moneim was WHO Representative in Iraq from January 2020, a position that he had occupied on an interim basis since August 2018.
Before his Iraq assignment, Dr Ismail worked for 13 years as the lead for the essential medicines and health technologies programme in the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in Cairo, Egypt. His duties, among others, involved providing support to Member States in:
developing national strategies and programmes;
designing regional tools/guidelines;
promoting intersectoral collaboration with relevant institutions; and
strengthening national capacities in this particular area.
Prior to joining WHO, Dr Ismail worked as a professor in several academic institutions in Egypt and the United States, publishing many articles in renowned peer-reviewed journals and participating in many national and international conferences.
He has over 20 years of experience in clinical and biomedical engineering. Coupled with his extensive work experience, Dr Ismail has three Masters’ degrees, respectively in Public Health from the University of Roehampton (United Kingdom), Biomedical Engineering from Alexandria University (Egypt), and Business Administration from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. He is also a holder of a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami (United States).
