In support of the patient safety initiative, the Regional Office developed and adopted a regional strategic plan to:

raise the awareness of policy-makers, the public and health care providers on the magnitude of adverse events and the concept of patient safety

assess the scope of patient harm with reference to specific morbidities and potential ways to prevent/eliminate them

enhance the understanding of the causes which lead to harm to recipients of health care services and develop suitable and effective reduction strategies

develop frameworks for patient safety models and test their appropriateness through pilot testing

organize and run approved operational patient safety programmes, with clear targets, to ensure the safety of patient care at all levels and to replicate successful safety strategies and activities within all health care settings.
