Clinical guidelines for the management of hypertension

© World Health Organization 2005

This publication presents guidelines that recognize the complementary nature of non-pharmacological approaches to management and pharmacotherapy and which are cost-effective. Developing skills to apply the non-pharmacological approach presents a challenge, as most doctors in our Region must be trained to be able to advise their patients on a non-pharmacological approach. Countries need a cost-effective drug management strategy that promotes adherence to medical therapy, motivates patients, builds trust and strengthens communications between clinicians and patients and their families. It is hoped that these clinical guidelines will make a positive contribution to the improved management of hypertension in the Region.

Strategy for cancer prevention and control in the Eastern Mediterranean Region 2009—2013

© World Health Organization 2010

Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region and its incidence is increasing rapidly. It is estimated that cancer currently kills 272 000 people each year in the Region- more than HIV, tuberculosis and malaria combined. At present, resources for cancer control in the Region as a whole are not only inadequate but directed almost exclusively to treatment. This approach is suboptimal because full advantage is not taken of the impact of preventive measures on incidence, while the lack of approaches to achieve earlier diagnosis reduces the value of therapy.

Working closely with Member States, WHO developed a regional strategy on cancer prevention and control, which aims at minimizing the growing impact of cancer in the Region over the following years (2009-2013). The regional strategy was endorsed by the ministers of health at the 56th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean in October 2009. The strategy provides a foundation for the development of a comprehensive coordinated national approach to cancer control that is resource-oriented. A framework for country action was developed also, to support countries in adapting the regional strategy according to their cancer national priorities and available resources.

Plan of action for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

© World Health Organization 2011

Guided by the Global action plan for the global strategy for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 2008 and in consultation with Member States, the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has developed a regional plan of action for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases through a consultative process involving regional and international experts to oversee its development.

This action plan represents a step forward in preventing noncommunicable diseases in the Region, and in strengthening regional efforts to implement prevention and control programmes for the treatment of noncommunicable diseases. The action plan addresses six identified objectives to be supported by Member States, WHO and international partners over a 6-year time period covering three biennia 2010-2015.
