The Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors is a nongovernmental, non-partisan and non-profit organization whose aim is to support and promote medical journalism in the Eastern Mediterranean Region by fostering networking, education, discussion, and exchange of information and knowledge. The Association was established following the first and second regional conferences on medical journals, held in Cairo in 2003 and Riyadh in 2004, respectively.

The Association is closely affiliated to the World Health Organization, Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, which hosts the EMAME web site and members' listserv. Cooperation with the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) and the Forum for African Medical Editors (FAME) and other international associations in the field of medical journal publishing is sought and encouraged.

Membership is open to editors of medical journals from Member States of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. Associate membership is also available.

The specific objectives of the Association are to:  

• promote co-operation and communication between editors of medical journals in the Region and throughout the world.
• promote health care through the dissemination of high-quality scientific medicine.
• improve editorial standards and promote professionalism in medical editing through education, self-criticism and self-governance.
• promote research in peer review and medical editing.
• co-operate with any national or international body which pursues objectives similar to, or compatible with, the Association e.g. WAME and FAME.
• contribute to the worldwide medical society.
• promote the provision of free access or special access to medical journals in underdeveloped countries, such as through the HINARI initiative.
• promote international indexing.
• form an advisory board for WHO indexing, for which the quality not the quantity is important.
• promote continuing education for editors of medical journals with regular conferences and courses on an annual or 2-yearly basis.
