31 May 2026, Kabul, Afghanistan – Malnutrition threatens the lives of children across Afghanistan amid a worsening humanitarian crisis driven by economic hardship, food insecurity, recurrent disease outbreaks, climate shocks and limited access to health and nutrition services. It is projected that across the country nearly 3.7 million children under 5 will suffer from acute malnutrition in 2026, including 95 000 children expected to face severe acute malnutrition with medical complications, a life-threatening condition if not treated in time.

In Ghazni Province, 12-month-old Wahidullah arrived at Moqur District Hospital fighting for his life. Weak, severely malnourished and with persistent vomiting, his condition had become critical.
“When he arrived, he was extremely fragile and fighting for survival,” recalled Nasima, a nurse at the hospital. “We immediately started treatment and closely monitored him day and night.”
With funding from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF), the World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting the provision of lifesaving nutrition services to vulnerable communities across the country, including at Moqur District Hospital’s stabilization centre. The unit has undergone minor renovations and is equipped with essential nutrition supplies, medicines and trained health workers to provide urgent care for severely malnourished children like Wahidullah.

Over five weeks, Wahidullah gradually regained his strength. His appetite improved, his medical condition stabilized and he began to gain weight.
“Wahidullah’s recovery shows that timely nutrition interventions can save lives,” said WHO Representative in Afghanistan Dr Edwin Ceniza Salvador. “It is important to emphasize the need for sustained humanitarian support to help WHO and other health partners keep essential nutrition services running for children and families across Afghanistan.”
WHO extends its sincere appreciation to AHF and other health and nutrition partners for supporting lifesaving nutrition services for vulnerable children and communities across Afghanistan.
