Eastern Mediterranean Network of Health Promoting Schools

The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Network of Health Promoting Schools provides a regional forum, based on best practices and the state-of-the-art, to mainstream health into daily school activities and environment, and consolidate learning achievements, through building partnerships, sharing experiences, and availing innovative approaches and appropriate tools.

It is based on the principles of voluntary partnership, sustainability, decentralization and country-based management and responsibility, regional and subregional coordination, empowerment, gender balance, democracy, equity, action competence and professionalism.

Objectives

The objectives of the Network include:

  • advocating and influencing policy development, and raising awareness of the benefits and needs for effective school health systems and health promoting schools.
  • facilitating sharing of information, experiences, connections, best practices, and technical and scientific resources, related to promoting the health and achievements of educational communities among network-members.
  • facilitating building and strengthening national capacities for supporting school health and health promoting schools at various levels (human, infrastructure, fundraising, information) by providing technical expertise and guidance, mobilizing resources, encouraging best approaches in education and training, and enhancing the flow of credible health and education information.
  • facilitating the creation and sharing of regional and national database on school health and health promoting schools, providing best available evidence on the cost-effectiveness of health promoting schools and encouraging scientific research that targets school setting and school communities.
