Cholera in Somalia, monthly situation update, November 2016

  • Cholera_update_in_SomaliaCholera in Somalia, monthly situation update, November 2016As of 30 November, a total of 14 165 cases and 497 deaths (case–fatality rate 3.51%) have been reported. Of these, 6752 (47.7%) affected females, and 8184 (57.8%) affected children below 5 years of age.
  • There is a slight increase in the number of acute watery diarrhoea/cholera cases during this reporting period. As shown in the EPI curve, 437 new cases and 1 death were reported in November, compared to 108 cases and no deaths in October.
  • Of the 437 acute watery diarrhoea/cholera cases reported, 232 (53%) affected females and 221 (50.6%) were children under 5 years of age.
  • Of the 7 stool samples collected from suspected cholera cases in Beledweyne Hospital, 5 tested positive for Inaba and Ogawa serotypes.
  • As shown on the map, new cases were reported in the Banadir region (123 cases) and Beledweyne (314 cases) in the Hiran region. The regions most affected by cholera are Banadir, Middle and Lower Jubba, Lower and Middle Shebelle and Hiran.
